Burton L. Dunbar PhD, AAA, with more than 25 years appraisal experience, specializes in American and European paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture. His appraisal specialties, recognized by the Appraisers Association of America, include the designation of “Certified Member” in the area of American Art and “Accredited Member” in the fields of Post War, Contemporary and Emerging Artists; Impressionism and Modern Art; Nineteenth Century Art; Old Master Paintings; and Prints.

Since the founding of his appraisal service, Dunbar has expanded his offerings to include the expert contributions of other appraisers who specialize in the Decorative Arts, Non-Western Tribal Arts, Native American Art, Far Eastern Art, Oriental Carpets, rare books, and fine jewelry.

In addition to the Midwest, these contributing appraisers and researchers are located in New York, Santa Fe, and Denver.

  • Burton L. Dunbar, Ph.D. is a Certified Member of the Appraisers Association of America and follows the Code of Ethics of this group.
  • He meets the standards for a Qualified Appraiser as set forth by the IRS.
  • His Appraisal Reports follow the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), compliant through 05/2021. USPAP is the Congressionally recognized set of appraisal standards promulgated by The Appraisal Foundation.
  • Burton L. Dunbar brings the standards of academic excellence to fine art appraising. With a Ph.D. in art history, he has taught at the university level at the rank of full Professor, concurrent with administrative appointments as department chairperson and associate dean of liberal arts. He is author of numerous scholarly publications, and he has served on the board or as an officer in several professional organizations.
